What is a Community Foundation
Mission
The Airdrie & District Community Foundation is a registered charity for individuals and businesses to make tax deductible donations to a permanent financial legacy to benefit our community, now and forever.
News
Directors Retire
Rod Allen and Shelley Bitz, two key members of the Airdrie & District Community Foundation, have retired after years of service as directors.
Foundation Chair Dale Rathgeber praised them, saying, “Rod obtained our charitable status allowing us to issue tax receipts for donations. Without Rod’s hard work, we wouldn’t have a Foundation.”
“Shelley brought to the board, a wealth of financial and event planning expertise and was a key fundraiser. She will be missed on the board, but has agreed to stay on as a “Friend/Ambassador” of the foundation.”
New Director
Joining the board is Bob Abbott, a former director and president of the Airdrie Festival of Lights.
Our History
Almost every City in Canada has a charitable community foundation to create a permanent financial legacy for future financial grants to enhance the lives of residents, particularly, the disadvantaged. Community foundations issue tax receipts for donations, and hold the principal forever in investments, while donating the interest and fund earnings every year to worthwhile local charities.
Our Community Foundation started in 2016 with $10,000.00. Since then, with great community support our fund has grown to over $700,000.
In 2023 we granted funds as follows (for earlier years, please see our grants page )
2023
The Foundation was chosen by the Government of Canada to allocate $295,000 in Community Services Recovery Fund grants. These grants went to four local organizations:
• $100,000 Airdrie Food Bank
• $96,475 North Rocky View Community Links Society
• $53,525 Rocky View Foundation
• $45,000 Thumbs Up Foundation
In addition, the Foundation awarded regular grants, based on income from its $700,000 permanent fund:
- Airdrie Public Library: $9,000
- Airdrie Rotary Festival of Performing Arts: $3,000
- Variety Alberta: $3,000
- Community Links: $5,000
- Airdrie & District Victims Assistance Society: $8,000
